Building the Alaska Ark

July 29, 2008

Noah has nothing on us. . . after 42 summers in Alaska, I find this year it’s necessary to start building the ark.  Every summer has been so beautiful, but we knew that had to end.  The rains have descended upon us to a point where you just want out.  However, it could be worse, I guess.  Look at Las Vegas, where it’s around 110 in the shade.  I need to re-think this moving idea.

The Anchorage Bucs Baseball Club has had their worst season since their inception in 1980.  The positive side of this is that they can’t lose when the game’s been rained out.  However, the usual three day Mayor’s Cup was reduced to one game, but at least it ended pretty fast.  It’s like putting the knife in and then twist, twist .  ..  The big Petroleum Club golf tournament also had a sad note, as one of the volunteers fell from the golf cart en route to the hole he was going to watch, and he fell out, got a concussion, followed by a heart attack in the hospital, and tonight they had a wake for him at the club.  He was just 53 yrs. old  . ..  it’s just been one thing after anotgher.

Looking on the positive side, I think the giant cabbages at the fair this year will top any past sizes, as the growing season has been so good, with the rain, and [very] intermittent sunshine.  We have flowers and deck plants of veggies that we don’t even have to water, so life is good.  I threw a rotting potato on the kitchen sink into a large pot of dirt and now I have a bunch of real potatoes.

The tourist season has not been outstanding either, according to the vendors.  Bear attacks are on the rise, and with the greenies lobbying for them, you can’t shoot them.  Right of way goes to the bears and moose, which have been invading the city at will.  The fishing derby in Seward was a good one, but the fellow who caught the ‘big one’ didn’t buy a derby ticket for $10, so he didn’t win the prize.  He was a tourist and ‘didn’t know’ or perhaps had spent his last ten before fishing.  So goes it in the summer of ‘08 . . . let’s just forget it.

The Dog Days of Summer

July 8, 2008

Anchorage has it’s Fourth of July parade, but it was minimal this year . . . blame it on the mayor who decided to tear up all the downtown streets at the same time. Parking is bad enough, but you can’t even drive straight thru town to get anywhere. . . it’s become a game. . . . tourism is also down, but the Euro is strong in USA so we have an influx of Europeans visiting. . . and a maximum number of Mt. McKinley climbers . . . a minimum number of deaths from the same place, plus too many highway crashes. We’re escaped the terrible fires of California and Oregon, so far, so let’s hope we get thru the summer unscathed . . . also downers include (1) bad weather, (2) a losing baseball team and (3) gas priced above the lower states, altho’ we have plenty of oil underground here, but the feds won’t let us drill . . . hardly a fun blog to read today, but I hope you enjoy this image of a typical Sourdough . . . check back soon.

Beautiful Sunny Days in Alaska

July 2, 2008

Perhaps they just seem so special because of the contrast with the bad weather we’ve been having in Anchorage. However, the good weather is like no other, and to add to that, there’s a Ball Game today. The bike trails are crowded, and a bear attack this weekend made it to the National Media. A young girl was biking in the 24 hour marathon when she was attacked, but luckily the leader found her, and once again, a cell phone led to saving her life. They have since closed that trail to bikers.
Like other cities, we have noon music at various places around town. Downtown has a nice ’stage’ at the old city hall, which is now used by the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The public library has a large patio, which is perfect for the outdoor conerts, with the indoor theatre as a backup.
